Kalinga Community and Associative Radio, and the online media DEC-Organization, already strongly engaged in community awareness campaigns in Idjwi, play an essential role in the prevention and fight against Ebola virus disease. In this island territory located in the heart of Lake Kivu, where the geographical isolation of many localities complicates access to information, these media often constitute the main source of information for the populations. They make it possible to quickly disseminate public health messages, explain the modes of transmission of the disease and promote preventive behaviors such as regular hand washing, early reporting of suspected cases and compliance with health measures recommended by the authorities.

Through their local programs, Kalinga Community and Associative Radio, and the online media DEC-Organization (www.dec-rdc.org) strengthen risk communication and community engagement in the face of epidemic threats on a daily basis. Community radios occupy a special place thanks to their ability to communicate in local languages and their proximity to residents. Through interactive broadcasts, debates, testimonies and interventions by health experts, they help to combat rumors, false information and erroneous beliefs likely to slow down response efforts. During epidemics, they also build trust between communities and health teams by giving voice to local leaders, survivors and civil society actors. This approach promotes community support for prevention measures and reduces resistance often observed during health interventions.

Thanks to their complementarity, Kalinga Community and Associative Radio and the online media DEC-Organization demonstrate that reliable, accessible and regular information constitutes an essential weapon against Ebola. Online media significantly expands the reach of awareness campaigns by disseminating verified information, health alerts and educational content in real time to a wider audience, including young people. Digital platforms also facilitate exchanges between communities, humanitarian organizations and health authorities. In a context where the speed of information can save lives, the synergy between community radios and online media constitutes a strategic lever to strengthen the resilience of the populations of Idjwi, improve risk communication and support an effective response against any threat linked to Ebola virus disease.
